Did Jaren Hall take Nick Mullens' job as Vikings quarterback on Saturday?

The Minnesota Vikings have filled the quarterback position for 2024. JJ McCarthy was expected to play a role at some point. With McCarthy out for the season, Minnesota must choose to replace him with Sam Darnold. Jaren Hall made his case on Saturday.

Is Jaren Hall doing enough for the Minnesota Vikings?

Sam Darnold will start for the Minnesota Vikings. It's possible that he won't be the same all season. Unless he hits the ground running in the best situation of his career, his chances of greatness are slim. Kevin O'Connell has to decide who will be his replacement in 2024. Nick Mullens is the presumptive favorite, but second-year quarterback Jaren Hall looked good on Saturday.

After a rather lackluster performance against the Las Vegas Raiders in the first preseason game, Hall turned things around against the Cleveland Browns. Although Hall only threw five passes, the Vikings quarterback completed four of them and reached the end zone twice. His 87 yards resulted in an average of 17.4.

Mullens took most of the snaps, but he completed only 11 of his 21 attempts. The veteran scored one touchdown on 135 yards. Mullens took three sacks for a total loss of 22 yards.

Is Jaren Hall capable of taking over the backup job for the Minnesota Vikings?

When Kirk Cousins suffered an Achilles injury, the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback situation was thrown into disarray. Jaren Hall was sent into the game before he was ready, and it showed. His development level didn't look great at the start of the preseason, but he was impressive over the weekend. It seems unlikely that Minnesota will add both Nick Mullens and Hall to the roster, but who gets kicked out?

Matt Corral signed this week and has only played a few snaps for Minnesota. His safety was ugly against the Browns and he doesn't seem like a realistic roster option for O'Connell. Should Hall secure a spot behind Darnold, it still seems plausible that Minnesota will aim higher. Minnesota could opt to sign another veteran signal caller as a safety behind their starter.

Expectations for the Vikings are understandably low this year, and will drop even further if Hall (or Mullens) is called upon to play in any significant way. For now, though, it's hard to argue that Hall's stock isn't trending upward.
