Jasper, Missouri woman charged after shooting her husband in the leg and confronting police

JASPER, Missouri (KY3) – A Jasper, Missouri woman has been charged after shooting her husband in the leg following an argument and a confrontation with police.

According to court records, Sommer Closser is charged with second-degree domestic violence, unlawful use of a weapon, attempted escape from custody and second-degree criminal damage to property.

At around 3 a.m. on Friday, August 16, Jasper police responded to a domestic violence call involving a firearm. Authorities say the initial call was reported as an accidental shooting and Closser made the 911 call.

When officers arrived, they found the male victim in the front yard with a gunshot wound to the leg. Both Closer and the man told authorities he accidentally shot himself.

The story changed after officers interviewed the victim at the hospital.

According to court documents, the victim said he and Closser were watching “Game of Thrones” in their living room and had a drink the night before. The victim said Closser went from 0 to 100 in a rage.

He told authorities they had an argument about an hour before calling 911. After the argument, investigators said, the man went to lie down in a bedroom but heard Closser and a child in the living room.

When the man returned to the living room, authorities said, Closser was holding a gun and yelling, “If your family wants to talk about me behind my back, I'll give them something to talk about.”

The man then tried to grab the gun, but after a struggle a shot went off and hit him in the leg. The man then crawled out of the house and threw the gun into the yard.

According to authorities, Closser then came into the yard and called 911. She put her hand over his mouth and told the victim, “We have to get our story straight. It was an accidental shooting or I'm leaving you.”

Law enforcement attempted to contact Closer, but she requested an attorney.

Authorities determined that there were two children in the home at the time of the shooting and that one of them was in the room when the shot was fired.

According to Jasper police, Closser was combative and refused to cooperate when arrested. At one point, she attempted to escape custody by freeing a wrist from handcuffs and kicking, damaging the patrol car door.

Police believe that the presence of the children could lead to further charges of endangering the welfare of children.
