Foreign leaders on Sunday congratulated Paetongtarn “Ung Ing” Shinawatra, the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin, on her appointment as Thailand’s youngest prime minister.

Those who shared their congratulations on social media included Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Robert F. Godec.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Anwar wrote: “As close neighbours, Malaysia and Thailand share an important and enduring partnership based on long-standing historical, cultural and economic ties, as well as deep-rooted kinship.”

“I look forward to working closely with Prime Minister Paetongtarn to realize the full potential of our bilateral relations,” he said.

Meanwhile, Modi wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that he looked forward to working with Ms Paetongtarn to strengthen ties between the two countries. “Congratulations @ingshin on your election as the Prime Minister of Thailand. Best wishes for a very successful tenure,” Modi said in a post on his X account.

“I look forward to working with you to further strengthen India-Thailand bilateral relations, which are built on strong foundations of civilizational, cultural and people-to-people ties,” he said.

Singapore's Prime Minister Wong also congratulated Ms Paetongtarn on his X account, writing: “Congratulations to Paetongtarn Shinawatra on his appointment as Prime Minister of Thailand. Singapore and Thailand have long-standing and complex relations built over the years by generations of heads of state. I am confident that this friendship will continue to flourish in the years to come.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Godec said on the X-account of the U.S. Embassy in Thailand: “On behalf of the United States, I congratulate Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra! I look forward to working with Ing Shinawatra and her government to further enhance the close friendship and partnership between us.”
