Arkansas Tech University student dies Saturday night of gunshot wound in off-campus dorm in Russellville | The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

An Arkansas Tech University student died Saturday night in an off-campus dormitory in Russellville, the university said in a press release Sunday.

At around 10:39 p.m., Russellville police responded to a 911 call regarding a person with a gunshot wound at a residence near Ashford Drive, police said in a post on Facebook.

When officers arrived at the scene, 19-year-old Jack Poole had already succumbed to injuries sustained from the gunshot wound, the post said.

The investigation is still ongoing, but initial indications suggest that the shooting was an accident, police said.

Poole, a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Morrilton and a sophomore at Arkansas Tech, is studying nursing, the university said.

“Arkansas Tech University extends its condolences to the family and friends of Jack Poole,” university President Dr. Russell Jones said in the press release. “There are no words that can adequately provide comfort at a time such as this. Our university community will be present and ready to help those close to Jack grieve.”
