CASE introduces new electric excavator 580EV

With the world's first electric excavator, CASE offers construction equipment fleets more options to comply with increasingly stringent emissions and noise regulations. Meet the CASE 580EV.

The new CASE 580EV electric backhoe loader has the same loading dimensions, digging specifications and breakout forces as the popular all-wheel drive 580SN diesel engine, but swaps the 97 hp combustion engine and fuel tank for an 80 kW electric drive motor supported by a 400 volt, 71 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Operators already familiar with the CASE 580SN will be comfortable with the new 580EV, which uses two independent electric motors for the PowerDrive transmission and hydraulic pumps that power the loader, excavator and steering systems to minimize energy consumption and improve performance in loading operations, while CASE features such as ProControl ride control, PowerLift/PowerBoost and electro-hydraulic controls improve precision and ease of use on the jobsite.

Parent company CNH knows that electric equipment empowers work teams by providing them with zero-emission, low-noise solutions that expand the types of jobs and sites they can work on. From overnight construction work to working in city centers or even indoors, the growing range of CASE electric vehicles offers power and performance that at least They're on par with their diesel counterparts, but offer unique benefits that combustion-engine machines simply can't match – and the same goes for the new 580EV, which the company says is the world's first production-ready electric excavator.

“Designing this machine from the ground up as a purpose-built electric vehicle rather than a retrofit has enabled a number of practical innovations that will positively change the mindset of teams thinking about electric vehicles,” said Brad Stemper, North America product management manager at CASE. “We looked at every aspect of the machine and improved power consumption throughout to deliver exceptional electric vehicle performance that operators will see and feel when digging, loading or moving earth.”

The new CASE 580EV electric backhoe loader will be complemented by two additional fully electric equipment options in the coming months, completing CASE's EV production range with a total of five machines by the end of 2024.

Electrek's opinion

When it comes to using heavy machinery, it's all about ROI. If the investment in electrification pays off, electrify. CASE has absolutely understood this – as proof, I present this sentence from the CASE website.

You will see the savings when you calculate the maintenance costs and downtime, because there is no combustion engine to maintain. This is a major benefit of electric vehicles and something you definitely shouldn't overlook when calculating the total cost of ownership for this machine.

Now Jon and Mike from the fleet just need to plug the 580EV's specs into their spreadsheets and see what comes out. But my fairly educated guess? I think CASE will sell a lot of them.
