Pittsburgh Steelers receive bad news after Jaylen Warren's injury

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled to avoid injuries during training camp and their first two preseason games. Now, after a disappointing 9-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills in which the first-team offense was nonexistent, some salt is being rubbed into their proverbial wound. It has been announced that running back Jaylen Warren will be out for several weeks with an apparent hamstring injury.

After catching a pass from quarterback Russell Wilson, Warren left the game under his own power but appeared to be limping. He missed the rest of the game and reportedly could be out for some time. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissaro, Warren's injury is a hamstring issue that could keep him out of action for several weeks.

With Warren's return date uncertain, it's possible he could miss the team's Week 1 opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Nick Farabaugh, Steelers sportscaster for Penn Live, added via his X account that Warren's availability for Week 1 “will be right on the edge.”

The injury comes at the worst possible time for the Steelers. Warren's 2023 season earned him a starting position on the team as he formed an impressive double play with Najee Harris. He posted over 700 rushing yards on 149 carries, as well as over 300 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Without Warren, Harris will likely continue his role as the Steelers' leader. Without Warren, he may see more action, but it's possible the Steelers will use this as an opportunity to give some other players more room to play.

Behind Harris, newly signed Cordarrelle Patterson should have more opportunities to play as a runner, while reserve players such as La'Mical Perine, Aaron Shampklin and Jonathan Ward, all of whom impressed in small doses during the preseason, could also benefit from Warren's injury.

The Steelers open their season against the Falcons in just a few weeks. The team travels to Atlanta to face the Falcons on September 8, so Warren has just three weeks to get back on the field.
