Bo Nix claims another starting spot for the Broncos

DENVER— Had Lucas Krull not fumbled his way into the game last week, Bo Nix might have led the Denver Broncos to points on every offense he led during the first two weeks of the preseason.

Instead, the Broncos' first-round pick will have to settle for leading the Broncos to three touchdowns and three field goals in seven series over the past two weeks, including a field goal and a touchdown in two series to open Sunday night's game against the Green Bay Packers.

In two series with the first team offense against the Packers' second defense, Nix took the Green and Gold by storm, completing all but one of his nine passes over 80 yards. He capped the night with a 2-yard pass to Tim Patrick that extended the Broncos' lead to 10-0.

The only slip-up for Nix came at the end of the first series when he drifted left, looked downfield and found Javonte Williams in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown – but the ball was taken back after crossing the line of scrimmage. Denver settled for a field goal.

On the next series, Nix was thrown back on first-and-20 after a holding penalty by Krull. But he didn't let it bother him, ran 10 yards around a Sutton block on first down and then threw to Sutton 23 yards down the right side to set up first-and-goal.

Nothing Patrick two games later for the score.

During two preparation games, Bo Nix’s statistics looked like this:

  • 23 of 30 passes (76.7 percent)
  • 189 metres
  • 6.83 yards per attempt
  • 2 touchdowns
  • 0 intercepted balls
  • 116.7 passer rating

It's hard to imagine a better preseason for the Broncos' highly touted first-round pick. And even though Sean Payton refused to reveal his cards earlier this week, all roads seem to lead to the Broncos taking Nix as their Week 1 starter — which would make him the first rookie quarterback to open a Broncos regular season since John Elway in 1983.
