Thunderstorms on Sunday night drench the city – NBC New York

A series of severe thunderstorms moved through the three states on Sunday evening, soaking already wet ground that had been badly damaged earlier in the morning.

The heavy rain presented New Yorkers with a familiar sight: flooding.

Perhaps the most dramatic spectacle took place in Manhattan, where water could be seen pouring from the ceiling of the popular Chelsea Market.

Puddles quickly formed on the city's streets, which are always the first victims of heavy rain.

In Central Park, the New York Police Department warned of severe flooding and advised drivers to avoid the 86th Street crossroads. And on the FDR Drive, officials said flooding had affected traffic on the north side.

Public transportation was also badly affected. Amtrak announced that all service between New York's Penn Station and Philadelphia was suspended at around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday due to flooding.

Due to the flooding, trains between New York and Philadelphia are stuck on the tracks.
