The doctor from Calcutta was found murdered in the hospital's seminar room on August 9. She had gone to the seminar room to rest after a 36-hour shift. She was raped and tortured before being suffocated.

“All the people we spoke to, even the MBBS doctors, agreed that it is not possible for a single person to cause so much damage,” the victim's father told NDTV.

He said they always believed their daughter was safe at her workplace and he got her a car so she could get to the hospital safely.

The victim's father said he had full faith in Mamata Banerjee but has now lost that faith. He said she has not taken any action to provide justice to the grieving family.

The victim's mother said Mamata Banerjee's schemes for women and girls were “pseudo schemes”. “Before you avail them, please check if your Lakshmi is safe at home,” she told the channel.

Police have arrested a Kolkata Police volunteer for rape and murder. The man, identified as Sanjoy Roy, was seen entering the building where the body was found. Police also found a Bluetooth earphone paired with Roy's phone near the body.

According to the autopsy report, the victim had bruises all over his body.

Doctors across the country have launched protests and strikes against this cruel crime.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor CV Ananda Bose to take immediate and decisive action in the Kolkata RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case. Governor Bose on Sunday said he had “convened an emergency meeting of a cross-section of Bengali society to apprise them of the action taken in the matter and seek their views on the issue.”
