Damon Roberts, 20, of Oakland, arrested in connection with the shooting and wounding of his sleeping father at home

OAKLAND – Authorities have released the name of the suspect arrested in connection with a shooting earlier this month in Oakland that left a father of two injured as he slept in his home.

The suspect – identified as 20-year-old Damon Roberts of Oakland – was arrested Monday in Richmond, the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department said in a news release.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged Roberts with several crimes, including illegal use of a weapon and possession of a machine gun. He is being held without bail in the Santa Rita Jail.

According to police, the shooting occurred on August 1 in a housing project in the 1900 block of East 19th Street in East Oakland, not far from San Antonio Park.

The victim, identified by family and authorities as 33-year-old Run Hua Kuang, survived but is still in hospital. According to nurse Jasmine Kuang, he is on a ventilator in the intensive care unit and is fighting for his life.

He had just come home from his job as a delivery truck driver and was taking a nap when a bullet ripped through the wall of his apartment, shattered the headboard of his bed and hit him in the head, said sister Jasmine.

Kuang was taken to a hospital where he underwent a seven-hour operation.

Jasmine said her brother immigrated to the United States from Taishan, China, in 2005, “seeking the American dream for his family.” He is the sole breadwinner for his wife, baby and three-year-old daughter. Since he is the only family member who speaks English, he handles household chores and communication alone.

Hua is the sole breadwinner for his wife of seven years, their daughters (ages 7 months and 3 years), and his parents. They live in a public housing project in East Oakland. His life has been based on discipline and dedication as a husband, father, and son.

The investigation is ongoing and the Oakland Housing Authority urges anyone with knowledge of the incident to call the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department at (510) 535-3100 or the anonymous tip line at (510) 535-3155.
