Health care disrupted by protests by young doctors

Calcutta: Healthcare services at government hospitals in West Bengal continued to be disrupted on Monday as junior doctors continued their walkout protest against the rape and murder of a colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

On the first day of the week, the outpatient clinics were extremely busy as senior doctors deployed their junior doctors to handle the situation.

“With this protest, we want to demand justice for a doctor who was brutalized for 36 hours straight while treating patients. It is the eleventh day since her body was discovered but where is the justice? We will continue this protest until we get justice for our sister,” said a protesting doctor from RG Kar MCH.

The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar MCH on August 9. Amid outrage over the incident, medical professionals across the country protested, demanding justice for the victim and legislation to ensure workplace safety.
