Knowing what you want to do in life can come down to long-standing passions, life experiences or the potential to make as much money as possible. With the cost of living crisis and HECS debts hard to pay off, some Australians may want to choose their career based solely on the amount that will come into their bank account with each pay cycle after they graduate.

While this doesn't guarantee job satisfaction or fulfillment, it can go a long way toward meeting basic needs and keeping a roof over your head. A survey by Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching has shown not only how much a graduate can earn in a particular field, but also the average salary once you're established.

Let’s unpack the data: Dentistry ranks at the top because it not only offers graduates a good salary but also has a strong growth rate after a few years.

Conversely, despite a strong start, the teaching profession recorded the lowest growth among the top 10.

Salary increases are greatest in the fields of engineering, law, computer science and natural sciences: just three years after graduating from university, employees here can earn up to $30,000 more.

However, the biggest salary increase is for pharmacy students. The salary of a graduate is about $49,600. In just 36 months, the salary rises to $92,000 – an increase of 85.5 percent.

Data from Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching, which surveyed graduates in 2020 and followed up in 2023 to determine their salaries, is worrying for people who want to study communications.

The average graduate salary with a degree in communications was about $56,000, rising to $73,000 after three years.

While it certainly wasn’t at the bottom of the list, it’s a tough road considering a three-year communications degree costs more than $50,000, according to Sydney Morning Herald.
