Bo Nix stats today: Broncos rookie takes a step toward starting spot with impressive performance against the Packers

One AFC West quarterback competition ended Sunday when the Raiders named Gardner Minshew their starter. Another may have ended on the field in Denver.

Bo Nix looked like an NFL-ready quarterback against the Packers, leading two drives that gave the Broncos a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The performance followed a strong preseason debut against the Colts a week earlier, in which Nix threw for 125 yards and a touchdown on 21 passing attempts. While Denver might have liked more efficiency from Nix against Indianapolis, that wasn't an issue in Sunday night's game.

Nix is competing with Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson for the Broncos' starting job, although the 24-year-old began training camp behind the two veterans in Denver's unofficial lineup. In a sign of Sean Payton's changing mindset, Nix started against the Packers after Stidham got the starting job in Indianapolis.

Here's a look at what Nix did against Green Bay in Denver to potentially earn the Broncos a spot in the starting lineup.

Nix, selected No. 12 in the 2024 NFL Draft, completed 8 of 9 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown against the Packers and led two scoring drives. Nix led an 80-yard touchdown drive that ended in the second quarter, got into the red zone with a 23-yard pass to Courtland Sutton and scored a touchdown two plays later through Tim Patrick.

Nix averaged just six yards per attempt in his preseason debut, but on Sunday he increased that mark to 8.9 yards per attempt and avoided turnovers.

As for the Broncos' quarterback competition, perhaps most telling is that nine passes from Nix were all Payton needed to see. Despite throwing 21 passes in his debut, Nix was taken off the field midway through the second quarter and Stidham got the ball.

After Sunday's performance, the most pressing question is whether Nix will even play in the Broncos' final game of the season against the Cardinals. If Denver ends its pregame competition and declares Nix the starter, the former Auburn and Oregon quarterback could be in a very good position for the opening game on September 8 in Seattle.
