3 dead after crash closes Route 101 in Candia, NH

Three people are dead and more injured after a serious crash closed westbound Route 101 in Candia, authorities said. Candia Fire Department Captain Mike Kelly told News 9 they received an alert for a head-on collision involving two cars around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. New Hampshire State Police said the driver of a Toyota Tundra was traveling eastbound on Route 101 at a high rate of speed before striking a Nissan Sentra. Authorities say the Toyota Tundra then struck a railing, crossed the median and later collided head-on with a Jeep Grand Wagoneer traveling westbound. “Our ambulance was actually near exit 3, so they were on the scene pretty quickly,” Kelly said. “They found multiple vehicles involved and initially reported multiple patients in critical condition,” Kelly said. >> Download the free WMUR app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play

Three people were killed and others injured after a serious crash closed Route 101 westbound in Candia, authorities said.

Candia Fire Department Captain Mike Kelly told News 9 they received an alert about a head-on collision involving two cars around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

New Hampshire State Police said the driver of a Toyota Tundra was traveling eastbound on Route 101 at a high rate of speed before colliding with a Nissan Sentra from the side. According to authorities, the Toyota Tundra then struck a guardrail, crossed the median and later collided head-on with a Jeep Grand Wagoneer traveling westbound.

Authorities said both drivers of the Toyota Tundra and Jeep Grand Wagoneer died from their injuries. State police said the passenger in the Jeep Grand Wagoneer was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and later died. Authorities have not released their names.

State police said the driver and passenger of the Nissan Sentra were taken to Elliot Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said the westbound lane of Route 101 was closed for about four hours while the investigation continued. Route 101 reopened around 4:40 p.m., officials said.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation said it is considering installing additional railings to prevent future head-on collisions on Route 101.

State police are investigating the accident and speed does indeed appear to be a factor in the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Will Bohnenberger at [email protected] or (603) 223-4381.
