A Massachusetts man suffered life-threatening injuries in an accident on Lake Memphremagog

Late Saturday night, Vermont State Police and several other first responders received a report of a boating accident on Lake Memphremagog near Derby, Vermont. They said the incident occurred between Black Island and Bell Island. The boat operator was Brian McLaughlin, a 57-year-old from Lowell, Massachusetts, who police say suffered life-threatening injuries. He was initially taken to North Country Hospital and has since been transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. The other five passengers, including a minor, were also taken to North Country Hospital but are not believed to have sustained life-threatening injuries. The VSP says the boat struck several large boulders and trees, adding that several passengers were ejected from the boat, causing McLaughlin to sustain serious injuries. Officers were alerted to the incident after good Samaritans heard the accident and helped rescue everyone involved and then transport them to Eagle Point in Derby, where emergency responders were waiting. The hull was largely damaged, however the boat did not sink and is still at the scene of the accident. It will be removed at a later date. Anyone with information is asked to call VSP Derby Barracks at 802-334-8881.
