Aug. 19 (UPI) – Several armed men opened fire during a gathering on an East Baltimore street on Sunday evening, killing one person and wounding seven others, authorities said.

During a press conference, Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley identified the deceased victim to reporters as a 36-year-old man.

He said all but one of the seven injured were men and between the ages of 22 and 45.

Her condition was between stable and critical, he said.

Police said the shooting was reported shortly after 8 p.m. EDT in the 1300 block of Spring Street.

Worley described the crime scene as “spacious” and said detectives had “scoured” the neighborhood for ballistics evidence and witnesses, as well as any footage of the shooting that might have been captured.

Several firearms were seized at the crime scene.

He said it appeared as if “several people opened fire” on a gathering on Spring Street.

Faith Leach, chief administrative officer for the city of Baltimore, told reporters that the city, under the leadership of Mayor Brandon Scott, will initiate community stabilization measures in the area in the coming days.

“We will be here,” she said. “We will be here immediately after this incident, but we will also be here long-term to address your challenges and needs and help the community heal.”

Scott said in a statement that authorities would work “tirelessly” to find those responsible for the shooting and bring them to justice. At the same time, he called for stricter gun laws.

“These tragic acts of violence – which continue to occur all too frequently in our city – are only possible because guns remain readily available on our streets,” he said. “We cannot acknowledge this tragedy without acknowledging the role that gun proliferation plays in endangering our communities.”

According to the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks gun violence in the United States, there have been more than 350 mass shootings – that is, shootings with four or more victims – so far this year.

The shooting came amid a decline in gun violence across the United States, according to a report released in June by the Center for American Progress, which found that Baltimore's population-adjusted gun violence victim rate has improved the most among the nation's 50 most populous cities this year.

Between January 1 and April 30, there were more than 16 fewer victims of assault in Baltimore than in the same period last year, it said.
