Some residents of Teshie were involved in a shooting incident on Monday, August 12, 2024, despite the fact that drumming and noise-making (“Gbemli Laa”) was prohibited despite a court order preventing the Traditional Council from doing so.

The Anti-Land Guard Unit of the Accra Regional Police is said to have shot dead three people while a faction of the traditional division was holding its part of the festival.

Noah Adjetey and Kai Sowah, two of the injured, were treated at LEKMA Hospital and have since been discharged. Ablorh Boye, the third victim, was taken to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for surgery as it is feared that he will require amputation due to the severity of his injuries.

This is the third incident of this type of violence in Teshie within four years. The underlying traditional conflicts remain unresolved. Residents have accused prominent NPP and government officials in the region of the conflict.

The community is now demanding a full investigation into the shooting and urging politicians to remain neutral as the chieftaincy issue is still before the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

They also call for the publication of a pending investigative report into Teshie traditional affairs to facilitate a resolution.

In addition, the municipality is demanding compensation for the victims of the incident.
