Saudi Arabia: 10 years in prison, up to 1 million SR fine for attack on teacher

Dubai: Saudi Arabia has reiterated that anyone who physically or verbally attacks a teacher, either in person or through social media platforms, faces a 10-year prison sentence and a fine of up to one million riyals.

The kingdom introduced this law in 2018 and classifies both physical and verbal abuse of teachers as criminal offenses.

The law was expanded to include social media and other digital platforms in response to the increasing misuse of these channels to defame and attack individuals.

This measure was introduced in response to an increase in brutal attacks on teachers. In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of students attacking teachers both in schools and on the streets.

One notable incident involved a student confronting his teacher, which resulted in a physical altercation that was caught on video and went viral on social media.

In 2018, a Saudi high school teacher in Taif was left bleeding and injured after a student hit him during class. The law clearly states: “Any physical attack on ministry employees will be considered a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment and a fine.”
