A Tesla driver who was allegedly speeding over the weekend in unincorporated Broward County when he was involved in a serious multi-vehicle crash that left two people dead is now behind bars.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident on August 11 shortly before 4 p.m. in the area of Northwest 27th Avenue and Northwest Sixth Street.

Gavin Dorvil, 19, of Lauderdale Lakes, faces multiple charges, including two counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of reckless driving, according to Broward Criminal Court records.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Dorvil was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 westbound on Northwest Sixth Street at a high rate of speed and approaching the intersection with Northwest 27th Avenue when he collided with the driver of a 2023 Dodge Durango.

Investigators said the T-bone impact caused the Durango to strike a 2024 Chevrolet Trax, which then flipped onto its roof. Meanwhile, the Tesla and Durango crashed through a chain-link fence surrounding a cemetery, where both vehicles came to a final stop, officials said.

Godwin Ogiste, the owner of a nearby food truck, witnessed the horrific accident and rushed to help.

“It was crazy. I was pulling people out. It was very tragic to see,” Ogiste explained. “I see all the smoke. I see all the cars piled up on top of each other. The one car overturned on the road.”

Several people were taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment and two were pronounced dead, the BSO confirmed.

According to investigators, the driver and a passenger of the Durango were the two people who did not survive the accident, while a third occupant was in critical condition.

The victims were later identified as Lisa Jackson and Geraldine Francis. The seriously injured person was a young girl, officials said.

Dorvil's mother told NBC6 that his leg was amputated on Tuesday. She said she didn't know much about what her son was doing.

“He always told me he was doing business,” Roseline Dorvil told NBC6 on Tuesday. “… I can tell you, yes, he's a good boy, because I don't know anything about what he's doing.”

The Broward Sheriff's Office told NBC6 that it is investigating whether BSO units were pursuing the Tesla before the tragedy. A BSO spokesperson confirmed that officers recovered a firearm at the scene that is believed to have come from the Tesla.

The BSO spokesman also said Wednesday that two deputies had been assigned limited administrative duties while the internal investigation into the incident was ongoing.

Records show Dorvil was arrested on July 15 on charges of carrying a concealed firearm, grand theft of a firearm and resisting arrest without violence. He has yet to appear in court for a bail hearing.

Although investigators believe excessive speed was a factor in the accident, impairment is not suspected at this time. The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.
