New information released on plane crash and fire at Washington airport

WASHINGTON, NC (WITN) – There is new information regarding yesterday's crash of a corporate jet at an Eastern Carolina airport.

A Washington-Warren Airport employee was injured while helping to extinguish the fire that broke out after the jet skied off the runway at about 5:40 p.m. Sunday. Authorities say the employee was treated and released from the hospital.

“The pilot and co-pilot escaped without a scratch,” said City Manager Jonathan Russell. He said a man and a woman were on board and were returning from Dallas, Texas.

The Cessna Citation, built in 2008, is owned by BJR Management of Goldsboro.

According to the FAA, the plane veered off the runway during landing and caught fire.

Flightaware.com reports that the jet took off from Wayne Executive Jetport in Goldsboro for the 15-minute flight to Washington, and had previously flown from Palm Coast, Florida, and Dallas. The website says the jet began its day that morning at Washington airport with a flight to Dallas.

The National Transportation Safety Board investigates the plane crash and usually publishes a preliminary accident report one to two weeks after the accident.
