Juvenile murder suspect Carly Gregg may face trial

A 15-year-old girl accused of killing her mother, a teacher, has been declared competent to stand trial. Carly Gregg is charged with murder and attempted murder. Her mother, Ashley Simpson, was killed and her stepfather injured in a March shooting at the family's Brandon home. During Monday's hearing, Rankin County District Court Judge Dewey Arthur asked attorneys about a report he expected from a doctor examining Gregg's mental state. Prosecutors told the judge that the doctor believed Gregg was competent to stand trial. The psychologist testified during Monday's hearing that medications prescribed to Gregg at the time of the murder may have played a role in her behavior. Gregg's attorney, Kevin Camp, moved to sign the doctor's report. Camp argues that media coverage of the case will affect the outcome of the trial. Arthur has previously denied a defense request to exclude the media and the public from Gregg's trial. The defense has had another doctor examine Gregg's mental state, but Camp said they have not yet received the full report. Camp said the doctor has not finished the examination despite an order from the judge. Judge Arthur has granted a defense request to hire another doctor to do the examination. Gregg is scheduled to stand trial in Rankin County District Court on Sept. 16. Until then, Gregg will be held in solitary confinement in the Rankin County Jail.
