There were “misleading statements on the Internet” and “personal conversations to maintain secrecy”

The team behind Deadpool & Wolverine has made no secret of the fact that the upcoming Marvel film features some pretty big superhero cameos that will delight comic book movie fans, but protecting those cameos meant feeding fans misinformation. In an interview with GamesRadar+, executive producer Wendy Jacobson said, “Perhaps there was some deception and misdirection online or in person to keep the secrecy.”

“I can't confirm or deny that there are cameos in this film, but I will say that in terms of the characters that may or may not appear, it was always important to us that nothing in this film felt like a gimmick,” Jacobson added. “Everyone who shows up has a crucial function in the story or a beginning, middle and end as a character arc. It was definitely a collaborative process to figure out who fits in and who doesn't.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy told Weekly entertainment Earlier this month, he said his film features a lot of cameos, but stressed that the team behind the Marvel blockbuster “didn't want cameos or characters to be the story of the movie. But they're sprinkled throughout.”

“There are a lot of characters,” he added. “The internet is full of rumors about the many cameo appearances of the characters in this film. Some rumors are true, others are completely false.”

One possible cameo that continues to generate excitement on social media involves Taylor Swift, who some fans are speculating will appear as either Lady Deadpool or the mutant Dazzler (a role she reportedly had her eye on back in the “X-Men: Apocalypse” days). The “Deadpool & Wolverine” team has frequently denied the rumor, with Reynolds recently telling E! News, “I'm going to say once and for all that the cameo thing with Taylor – because she's our friend – is not in this movie.”

The marketing materials for Deadpool & Wolverine have already confirmed several comic book characters that will appear in the film, including Lady Deadpool (the actor behind the mask is currently unknown), Pyro (Aaron Stanford in his role from X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand), X-23 (Dafne Keen in her role from Logan) and Sabretooth (Tyler Mane in his role from X-Men).

Stanford previously said Weekly entertainment that his return as Pyro after an 18-year break makes him “very happy” because he finally has the chance to wear a costume that is true to the comics in “Deadpool & Wolverine”.

“In the original 'X-Men' movies, Pyro really gets short shrift costume-wise,” Stanford said. “In 'X2,' we start with Pyro at Xavier's school for gifted mutants. The SWAT team bursts in in the middle of the night and we have to escape. So I spend half the movie in my pajamas. I never got the cool tactical leather suit that all the X-Men wear. And in 'X3,' I basically just wore an ensemble from Hot Topic. So to see him in a real superhero costume that actually came from the comics themselves was very cool.”

Keen, meanwhile to Entertainment Weekly that she rewatched “Logan” before reuniting with Hugh Jackman on the set of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” She added, “As soon as they said 'Rolling!' it really felt like we were back on Logan. It was like eight years hadn't passed.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” will be released in Disney theaters on July 26th.
