Name of man killed in Nelson County car crash released

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – One man died and two people were seriously injured in a traffic crash in Nelson County, according to Virginia State Police.

Avis W. Armentrout, Jr., 75, of Roseland, died Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the scene of a crash on Route 29 southbound at the intersection with Tye Brook Highway.

According to police, the driver of a GMC Sierra was traveling south on Route 29 and was unable to avoid a collision with a Ram 1500 that had entered the intersection. The Ram driver struck two traffic signs and came to a stop in the median, where the truck caught fire.

Armentrout was the driver of the Ram. Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt.

A passenger in the Ram, who was also not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police said. The teen driver of the Sierra was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
