Lewiston Public Schools honors employee killed in mass shooting

LEWISTON (WGME) – Lewiston school officials are honoring one of the victims of last year's mass murder who worked in public education for more than half a century.

Lewiston Public Schools renamed its business office after Lucy Violette on Monday.

The superintendent says she has worked for the Lewiston school board for more than 50 years.

Among those who spoke on Monday was Violette's daughter-in-law.

“Many people ask our family what they can do for us, and honestly, after what has happened in the last 10 months, there is nothing that can heal our pain and our loss,” said daughter-in-law Casandra Violette. “What you can do is honor Lucy. Honor her in the things you do every day.”

Violette began working in Lewiston schools in 1971 and refused to retire.

The new office, named Lucielle M. Violette Business Office, also features a bench dedicated to Violette in her name.
