Connor Stalions, former Michigan employee who allegedly stole signals, avoids the media in his job as a high school coach

Connor Stalions, the controversial former Michigan Wolverines football staffer who allegedly stole signals from opponents, volunteers as a coach for Detroit's Mumford High School football team.

However, Stalions does not seem to be in the mood to talk about his problematic past with the media who were present at training on Saturday.

The Detroit Free Press described a strange situation in which the Stalions tried to avoid the six-man media group by any means possible, including sprinting to the middle of the football field after the high school.

As announced last week, Stalions joined the staff of Williams McMichael, Detroit Mumford's new head coach, as a volunteer and as the team's defensive coordinator.

This also comes as a Netflix documentary about Stallions, titled “Sign Stealer,” is scheduled to air on August 27, in which he will break his silence on the matter.

As the Detroit Free Press reported, Detroit Mumford's practice was scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday morning. However, according to McMichael, the players were in the weight room at that time.

Text messages from Michigan coach Sherrone Moore with the ringleader of the cheating scandal are released. How does he feel?

The delay increased even further when McMichael came out of the building to tell the media that the exercise would be postponed until 12:30 p.m. It was 10 a.m. when McMichael addressed the group.

When neither players nor coaches came onto the field at 12:30 p.m., McMichael sent a text message – training had been postponed until 2 p.m.

“That was pushed back to 2:45 p.m. and finally McMichael said they would be on the field at 3:10 p.m.,” wrote Mike McCabe of the Detroit Free Press.

Eventually, the time came for the players to “enter through the back door of the school near the weight room, where the media was waiting.” Stalions, however, was not with the team. Instead, McCabe wrote, he skipped a front door and sprinted to the middle of the field, just feet from the media.

McMichael had told the media that he “didn't believe Stalions would speak to the media” despite being allowed to attend the training. McMichael added that Stalions claims he is not allowed to make any public statements until the Netflix documentary is released. The media tried to fight back, but McMichael said Stalions would not speak.

Stalions remains at the center of an investigation into an off-campus sign-stealing incident that led to Michigan suspending him in October 2023 before he resigned from his post. An NCAA investigation also resulted in a three-game suspension for former head coach Jim Harbaugh during the team's national championship run last season.

Stalions and Harbaugh, who returned to the NFL as coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, still face NCAA Level I violations.

The Stallions are accused of a conspiracy in which they purchased tickets to future games of Michigan's opponents and sent individuals to the games to videotape sideline signals from the stands.

Earlier this month, Michigan received a draft notice of accusation from the NCAA that found evidence that Stalions wore Central Michigan gear and made a sideline pass during a 2023 Chippewas football game against Michigan State, the Wolverines' same-state rival on the schedule.

The statement of allegations also stated that Sherrone Moore, who was promoted to head coach after Harbaugh's departure, faces a suspension and a hearing penalty for allegedly deleting text messages between him and the Stalions.

McMichael told the media that when he joined the staff, he was not concerned about NCAA rules that the Stallions may have violated during his time at Michigan.

“He had to go through a background check, just like everyone else who comes into the Detroit school district, and he passed. As long as he passed, I have no problem with him.”
