Protest: Residents of Sellur and Villapuram protest against sewage leaks and bad roads | News from Madurai

Madurai: Residents of Sellur held a protest on Monday and called for urgent repairs to the subway drainage (UGD) system. Residents complained that sewage has been leaking in the area for two weeks. In another part of Madurai Villapuram Local residents staged a protest rally and road blockade, demanding the repair of roads damaged by recent rains.
In Sellur, around 50 residents gathered near Sivan Street to protest against the poor sewerage system. Residents reported that sewage has been leaking in their area for the past two weeks, causing sewage disposal problems. Despite several complaints to the Madurai Corporation, no action has been taken.
M Dhanalakshmi, a resident of 3rd Cross Street in Sival Kovil Theru, said, “We have been complaining for two weeks, but no one from the corporation came to take care of the problem. It was only after we protested that the officials came to investigate the issue.”
Meanwhile, in Villapuram, residents expressed concern over the poor condition of roads in their area. Around 50 people blocked the main road of Villupuram to take action after many roads in the interior became muddy and impassable due to recent rains. Resident P Rajan said, “The main road to the airport is well maintained but all other roads are damaged. The civic officials ignored our complaints so we had no option but to protest. Now we hope they will carry out the necessary patching work.”
Police intervened to calm the protesters. Company representatives promised that the problems would soon be resolved.
