1 dead after rear-end collision causes fires on I-80 in Natomas

A multi-vehicle fire on westbound Interstate 80 near I-5 in Sacramento left one person dead Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said. According to the CHP, the driver of a pickup truck failed to see stopped traffic ahead of him and struck a Toyota Tacoma, setting off a chain reaction involving three other vehicles. Police said the driver of the Tacoma died at the scene after the first three vehicles caught fire and were fully engulfed in flames. Two other people were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries and one with minor injuries, the CHP said. Emergency crews initially responded to the highway for a multi-vehicle crash around 4:25 p.m. The Caltrans camera on I-80 in Natomas showed a large plume of smoke rising from the westbound lanes around 4:40 p.m. Traffic is flowing in two of the eastbound lanes, the CHP said. One person was killed in a multi-vehicle fire on westbound Interstate 80 near I-5 in Sacramento Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.

According to the CHP, the driver of a pickup truck failed to notice the stopped traffic in front of him and collided with a Toyota Tacoma, setting off a chain reaction involving three other vehicles.

According to police, the driver of the Tacoma died at the scene after the first three vehicles caught fire and were completely engulfed in flames.

Two other people were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries and one with minor injuries, CHP said.

The emergency services were initially dispatched to an accident involving several vehicles on the motorway at around 4:25 p.m.

The Caltrans camera on I-80 in Natomas showed a large plume of smoke rising from the westbound lanes around 4:40 p.m.

According to the CHP, traffic is flowing on two lanes heading east. There is no estimate as to when the other three lanes could be reopened.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
