Nancy Pelosi criticizes Republicans for comments on women during election campaign

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday sharply criticized Republicans for their comments about women, telling CNN the “misogyny is so obvious.”

On the first day of the Democratic National Convention, Pelosi was asked about the prospect of electing a woman president eight years after Hillary Clinton's unsuccessful candidacy and whether America had “moved on.”

After calling Clinton a “trailblazer” for candidates like Kamala Harris, Pelosi told Jake Tapper and Dana Bash that Republicans are promoting sexist ideologies in this presidential campaign.

“One of the things that's happening in this election is that the misogyny is so blatant,” Pelosi said. “The things that the Republican candidates are saying about women, I think, provoke a reaction.”

Both former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, have a long history of making controversial comments about women. For example, Pelosi alluded to Vance's suggestion that women without children – whom he called “childless cat ladies” – are not as committed to the future of the country as those with children.

“Women resent this because they go so far,” she said.

Pelosi is scheduled to speak at the party convention on Wednesday.
