According to police, the priest, identified as Ashish Kumar Dubey, 34, and his nephew were performing their daily pooja at home and were riding their motorcycle towards Laljipada in Kandivali West around 10.45 pm when an unidentified motorcyclist collided with their scooter. The men fell and sustained injuries on their legs. When they confronted the motorcyclist, the latter abused the men and left the place after abusing them.

“As the priests were injured, they sat on the pavement for a while before moving on. About 15 minutes later, when they reached the Laljipada junction, they noticed at least three men charging towards them with sticks and knives,” an official said.

The trio began attacking the priests with sticks on the crowded street as passersby looked on in horror. As the two men screamed for help, 22-year-old Pratham Khilare pulled out a knife and attacked Dubey, inflicting serious injuries on his shoulder. The priests then went to Shatabdi Hospital where their injuries were treated.

A video of the incident went viral on Sunday, following which the Kandivali police contacted the two priests and recorded their statements. Based on their statements, the police filed a complaint against four men under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 109 (attempt to murder) and 115 (causing hurt to a person).

Of the four men, police have arrested Khilare and Chotu Maniyar (22). “We are looking for two more men, including the motorcyclist who started the attack,” said a police officer from Kandivali police station.
