Blackhawks' new NHL Winter Classic jersey leaked online: First look

With four NHL Winter Classics, two Stadium Series games and two reverse retro jerseys in the last 15 years, the Chicago Blackhawks are no stranger to reinterpreting their historic look. But their latest specialty jersey is the first to be dominated by their primary color, red.

A source involved with the release confirmed that the jersey leaked by Icethetics is indeed what the Blackhawks will wear on New Year's Eve at Wrigley Field in Chicago against the St. Louis Blues in the Winter Classic. The source was granted anonymity because the jerseys have not yet been released.

The jersey features a new version of the historic circled Blackhawks crest, which was a regular feature until the ring was dropped in the 1950s. With the black and cream stripes on the chest and the second logo of the crossed tomahawks on the sleeves, it is distinctive but familiar.

The Blackhawks' fifth Winter Classic will be played on December 31, rather than the traditional New Year's Day, to avoid clashing with the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. It is the second Winter Classic to be played at Wrigley Field; the Blackhawks lost 4-6 to Detroit in 2009. The special jerseys from that game remain popular to this day.
