What Does 'Scab' Mean? The Viral DNC T-Shirt, Explained – NBC Chicago

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain wore a T-shirt that sparked a stir on social media during his address to the DNC on Monday. But what does it mean?

The shirt he wore under his jacket during his speech bore the phrase “Trump is a strikebreaker. Vote for Harris.”

His rhetoric reflected this mood: He called former President Donald Trump a “strikebreaker” and praised Vice President Kamala Harris as a champion of the working class.

But what does the term “corruption” mean?

According to the Huffington Post, a “strikebreaker” is a worker who refuses to join a union, but it is also someone who breaks a picket line during a strike.

Trump has faced pressure from unions for decades, but his presidency has only increased that criticism. According to CNN, Supreme Court justices appointed by the Trump administration helped to overturn regulations on public sector unions, making it easier for public employees to avoid paying union dues even if they work in a unionized workplace.

He was also criticized by the DNC for failing to keep a GM plant in Ohio open despite promising to protect jobs there.

The UAW supports Harris along with several other prominent unions.

Notably, this has not been the case with the Teamsters Union, and its president, Sean O'Brien, spoke at the Republican National Convention but was not invited to the DNC in Chicago.
