New survey shows: More and more Americans are concerned about job security

According to a survey just released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, more and more Americans fear losing their jobs. Fear of becoming unemployed has risen to 4.4%, according to the survey.

According to statistics provided by David Sikora, a professor of management at Georgia Southern University, this could be due to inflation.

If something goes wrong with their job, you know if they have the financial resources they need to take care of themselves,” Sikora said.

But it's not just about inflation. Sikora says sizing could also be a factor.

They either work in an industry that is currently experiencing downsizing or job losses,” said Sikora.

However, Tom Smith, a finance professor at Emory University, believes there is not much evidence that Americans should be concerned.

The unemployment rate is still incredibly low and when I talk to people in HR, I know they're hiring a lot right now,” Smith said.

Plus, Smith says if you step back and truly understand your value to the company, you'll know whether or not there's cause for concern.

I suspect that once you understand how productive you are or are not, you can adjust your expectations about keeping or losing your job,” Smith said.

In the same survey, Americans also said they felt there were still opportunities, and the average probability of receiving at least one job offer also increased compared to last year.
