Man convicted of murder in Charlotte in 2019

Anthony Walker faces up to six and a half years in prison for a fatal shooting in April 2019.

CHARLOTTE, NC – A man was sentenced Monday in a fatal 2019 shooting.

Anthony QuShawn Walker, 31, was sentenced to 58 to 82 months in prison for the death of 40-year-old Damian Johnson.

In April 2019, according to witnesses, there was a fight at a party at a house on Catherine Simmons Avenue in which Johnson intervened to break up the fight but was shot in the process.

Police arrived at the scene and found Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken by paramedics to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Marcia Kovalchik said she and her family are still feeling empty after Johnson's death.

“We came here today looking for closure and unfortunately we didn't get that,” Kovalchik said. “I wanted to know why. I wanted to know why maybe it would be a little easier, maybe it would soften the blow a little bit.”

In the courtroom, Walker addressed Kovalchik and her family and apologized. Kovalchik said the apology was left upstairs.

“Sometimes you have to take your personal feelings out of a situation and understand that you're apologizing for the other person and not for yourself,” Kovalchik said. “Our families get tied to a number and that's something you can't appreciate.”
