Officials announce groundbreaking for new Iron County Jail and Sheriff Complex

CEDAR CITY – Officials on Friday broke ground on the new Iron County Sheriff’s Complex and Correctional Facility.

“Many people didn't think this day would happen, but now it is,” said Iron County Commissioner Marilyn Wood as she greeted the 100 or so people gathered at the 33.5-acre vacant lot in an industrial park south of Cedar City Regional Airport.

“Through hard work, perseverance and dedication, difficult and perhaps impossible things can happen,” Wood added.

Mike Bleak, also an Iron County commissioner, then spoke about his experience with the current Iron County Jail, which opened 37 years ago. Bleak, who has had a long career in law enforcement, said when he was first elected as a county commissioner several years ago, he was approached by then-Sheriff Mark Gower.
