Two teenagers face charges over the shooting at Greene's apartment that left a woman and a toddler injured

Two Washington County teenagers accused of shooting at a home near Waynesburg, injuring a woman and a 2-year-old child, are facing numerous charges.

The cases against Darius Elijah Wolfe and Jeremy Scott Currey were ordered to trial by District Judge Thomas Ankrom during their preliminary hearing Friday in connection with the July 13 shooting that left two people injured.

Wolfe, 18, of Claysville, and Currey, 19, of Washington, each faced five counts of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, as well as misdemeanor counts of conspiracy and disturbing the peace. Ankrom dropped only one count of conspiracy against Wolfe, while dropping all five counts of attempted murder against Currey.

State police said five shots were fired inside the Mountainview Gardens apartment in Franklin Township. The woman was hit in the left eye, while the toddler was hit in the right thigh. Both victims were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, for treatment and later released. Investigators did not identify the two victims, nor did they provide a motive for the shooting in court documents.

Greene County District Attorney Brianna Vanata said statements during a joint preliminary hearing of the co-defendants indicated that Wolfe was the only shooter, but the incident apparently began after an argument between Currey and the woman who was shot. In addition to the two suspects, five other people were in the apartment when the shooting occurred, Vanata said.

The woman said she was blind in one eye and needed further medical intervention, Vanata said, adding that the boy has since recovered without any major problems.

“It is a miracle that, as far as we know, he escaped without any lasting injuries,” Vanata said of the toddler.

Currey's defense attorney Timothy Ross declined to comment on the case, while Wolfe's public defender Harry Cancelmi did not respond to a reporter's phone message.

Both juveniles, who were arrested on July 22, are being held without bail in the Greene County Jail while awaiting trial. Their formal arraignment is scheduled for September 23 at 1 p.m. in the Greene County Courthouse.
