Chavez vs. Mayweather: The revival of a dream fight?

Fans are excited about the possibility of a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Julio Cesar Chavez. Former three-weight world champion Chavez uploaded a mock poster showing him and Mayweather Jr. with the caption “September 16th in Las Vegas.”

Fans wanted to see a fight between these two boxing greats years ago but never got the chance. Fans have speculated who would have won if Chavez and Mayweather had fought.

The question is, would fans be willing to pay for Mayweather vs. Chavez now? Chavez retired 19 years ago in 2005 and was way past his prime then. Unlike Mike Tyson, Chavez looks his age and more, and he could be inferior to Mayweather.

Is a possible exhibition in the works?

The exhibition match between the two former champions has not yet been officially announced and it is unclear whether this was just a gimmick by the 62-year-old Chavez to get some publicity. Mayweather's love of money makes an exhibition match possible. However, due to his age, it would be a risky fight for Chavez.

He is 15 years older than Mayweather and has stopped competing in exhibition fights to remain as active as he once was. The Mexican star would have to undergo a medical examination and they would have to find a state that would approve the fight.

Chavez and Mayweather were supposed to fight in the mid-1990s when Julio was still fighting. But Mayweather wasn't a star at the time and the fight wouldn't have sold well. The big PPV star at the time was Oscar De La Hoya, and he fought Chavez twice.

Floyd is set to fight an exhibition match against John Gotti III this Saturday, August 24, live on DAZN. It is unknown whether Mayweather will fight Chavez on September 16. That would be a quick turnaround for the 47-year-old Mayweather, but he would likely do it if the money was right.

Mayweather has kept his name in the spotlight through exhibition fights since his retirement following his fight against former UFC champion Conor McGregor in 2017. Many fans felt that the fight should have been considered an exhibition fight as well, as McGregor was making his professional boxing debut.
