PHOENIX – A man has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for causing a car crash that killed five people.

The accident occurred on January 12, 2023 on Interstate 10 near Wildhorse Pass Boulevard when Danny Glen Tiner drove at 68 mph through a construction zone where the speed limit was 55 mph.

Because Tiner failed to yield the right of way to stopped traffic, he caused a collision with six vehicles, including two semi-trailers that caught fire.

Five people died at the scene, including a man named Andrew. His mother spoke to ABC15 after the accident about how she remembers her son.

During the investigation, digital forensic data showed that Tiner had accessed at least four TikTok videos while driving and within seconds of the accident.

On Monday, Maricopa County District Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced that Tiner was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for five counts of involuntary manslaughter.

“As a driver, you have a duty to pay attention to the road. Choosing to access social media while driving and risking the lives of others is reckless,” said Maricopa County District Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “Five families are experiencing the pain of losing a loved one. While the legal system can never ease that pain, it can hold those responsible accountable. We have achieved that goal.”
