Part of the Mass. Pike closed after several accidents near I-84

According to MassDOT, the Massachusetts Turnpike in the central part of the state was temporarily closed in both directions Monday afternoon after several crashes occurred in the eastbound lanes of the highway. Shortly after 3 p.m., both sides of the highway at mile marker 85, about 7 miles east of the Interstate 84 interchange in Charlton, were closed for about 30 minutes. The westbound lanes reopened around 3:40 p.m., and the eastbound lanes reopened just before 6 p.m. Several damaged vehicles were at the scene, including semi-trucks, a Jeep Wrangler and a small maroon SUV, according to Sky5. Check your ride. State police said in the first incident, a truck carrying a forklift struck the guardrail. A flatbed truck carrying a Jeep swerved to avoid the crash, and the Jeep ended up in the roadway. A semi-truck swerved to avoid the Jeep on the roadway, and struck a box truck. The second crash occurred less than a mile away as drivers began braking in response to the first crash, state police said. A bobtail tractor struck the back of a passenger car, pushing it into the back of a fully loaded semi-truck. State police said there were no injuries in the first crash, but the driver of the passenger car involved in the second crash was seriously injured and was airlifted to a local hospital. Two juveniles riding in that car also suffered serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to the same hospital.

State police said in the first incident, a truck carrying a forklift crashed into the guardrail. A pickup truck pulling a Jeep swerved to avoid the crash and the Jeep ended up in the roadway. A semi-truck swerved to avoid the Jeep on the roadway and crashed into a box truck.
