Australian squad: Wallabies injury crisis worsens, Joe Schmidt recalls stars: Planet Rugby

Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has announced his 35-man squad for the two upcoming Tests against Argentina in the Rugby Championship.

Australia travels to Argentina to face Los Pumas in two friendlies in La Plata and Santa Fe.

After two defeats in a row, the Wallabies travel to South America in search of their first tournament victory. However, they have had to contend with further injuries: Filipo Daugunu and Hunter Paisami are out.

Wallabies squad for Argentina tour

Schmidt's 35-man squad includes four players without international experience, including Hamish Stewart and Corey Toole. The Wallabies boss also named Western Force's Josh Canham and Brumbies' David Feliaui.

Faeliuai comes into the team following Paisami's injury, while Canham adds Jeremy Williams and Nick Frost to the squad's lock options, both of whom are fit to travel despite missing the second Test against the Springboks.

Also named in the squad is hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa, replacing Billy Pollard. Paenga-Amosa returns to the Test side after a three-year stint with French club Montpellier. He has signed a contract to return to Australia and join the Western Force ahead of the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season.

In addition to the hooker, his new clubmate Tom Robertson, who was also called up to the team, will be joining the team.

The recalls of Robertson and Paenga-Amosa could serve to solve the Wallabies' problems in the front row, where they struggled to get equal numbers in the scrum against the Springboks – particularly in the first Test. Taniela Tupou's return from special leave and Angus Bell's fitness are also a huge boost for the Wallabies.

Waratahs backrow forward Langi Gleeson has returned from his ankle injury and will travel to Buenos Aires along with new debutants Max Jorgensen and Carlo Tizzano.

The tour is expected to be a major milestone for prop James Slipper who, if he plays in both Tests, would be the most-capped Wallaby of all time, as he is currently just one game behind George Gregan's record of 139 games for Australia.

“It’s been a challenging few weeks, but as a coaching group we want to continue to try to help a largely consistent group move forward,” said head coach Joe Schmidt.

“The Pumas have a talented and robust squad that will require further improvements from our squad in addition to the travel.”

Despite the boost provided by Paenga-Amosa and the return of several players from injury, Schmidt is still battling a long injured list that has now grown to 12.
