14 workers injured, 3 seriously, after carbon dioxide leak at wind power project in central Taiwan – Taiwan English News

This morning, Tuesday, August 20, 14 workers at a wind power project in Changhua County were hospitalized, three of whom lost their vital functions at the scene of the accident.

The Changhua County Fire Department dispatched two fire engines, seven ambulances and 18 personnel after receiving reports of numerous injuries due to a suspected carbon dioxide leak at the Hailong offshore wind power plant in Lukang township at around 10:00 a.m.

A total of 14 workers, all of Taiwanese nationality, were affected by the leak. Five people were unconscious and three had lost their vital signs. The three patients with pre-hospital cardiac arrest were resuscitated but remain in critical condition.

A fire department spokesman said the leak likely occurred while workers were installing fire extinguishers. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.

TECO Electric, which is responsible for the turnkey project, issued a statement saying that an fire extinguishing gas leakage accident occurred today at the Changhua site of the Hailong offshore wind power project. It is suspected that a CO2 fire extinguishing gas cylinder leaked at the construction site, causing injuries or discomfort to workers. The site manager reported the incident as soon as possible and the workers were sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. TECO Electric immediately counted the people on site after the accident and took them all to safety.
