Driver killed in Fairfield crash, passenger hospitalized

FAIRFIELD, Ohio (WXIX) – Fairfield police are on the scene of a fatal crash that knocked down a power pole and closed a major road for several hours.

Police say Mack Road is expected to be closed until about 7:45 a.m. while Duke Energy repairs or replaces the pole and resolves some power outages.

The single-vehicle crash was reported just before 2 a.m. Tuesday on Mack Road between Benchway Court and Arcade Drive, according to Fairfield police.

The first reports from the emergency call center indicated that a person had been thrown from the plane and that a rescue helicopter was needed.

According to the Fairfield Fire Department, at least one person was trapped in the vehicle and was freed when emergency crews arrived.

The male driver was taken to Mercy Hospital in Fairfield and pronounced dead, police Sergeant Kevin Harrington said.

The man's name and age were not disclosed.

His passenger was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and is in stable condition, the sergeant said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
