Kansas banker Shan Hanes was sentenced to prison for embezzlement and fraud

The former CEO of a rural Kansas bank who admitted to embezzling tens of millions of dollars in a cryptocurrency scheme has been sentenced to more than 24 years in federal prison.

Shan Hanes, 53, of Elkhart, was sentenced to 293 months in prison by U.S. District Judge John Broomes on Monday after previously pleading guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of embezzlement by a bank employee.

Bank boss was “the pig” in the pig slaughter fraud

“Mr. Hanes made some very poor decisions after becoming involved in an extremely well-run cryptocurrency scam,” his defense attorney, John Stang, wrote in a sentencing memo. “He was the pig that was slaughtered.”

Hanes was the “pig” in a cryptocurrency scam known as “pig slaughter,” a term derived from the fattening of pigs before slaughter, in which scammers steal money by convincing someone – the “pig” – to send money for what they believe is a legitimate investment. They may get even more money by promising higher returns for continued bogus investments.
