Sentence for woman after wrong-way driver accident with two dead and three injured continues

A woman who pleaded guilty to driving drunk the wrong way down a Las Vegas street and hitting a family of five, killing two of them at a bus stop, did not appear in court for sentencing.

The trial against Cynthia Phelps was postponed despite the sentencing date set for August 19. According to Elizabeth Reedy, the mother and grandmother of four of the victims, the 64-year-old was in the hospital and could not be transported.

Phelps is accused of driving the wrong way on Boulder Highway while under the influence of alcohol on April 17. Police said theycrashed into a family of five People waiting at a bus stop. Robert Higgins, 42, and his stepson Erik McPhearson, 14, were killed. Higgins' wife Amber Reedy, 42, and their two youngest children, Isabella McPhearson, 11, and 8-year-old Roman Ferris, survived.

Amber was in a coma but woke up on June 22, according to Reedy.

When Cristen Drummond contacted her, she wrote: “I don't believe in coincidences. How come this happened on the day she was convicted? Something is wrong.”

Reedy said her granddaughter Bella was ready to speak and she planned to bring Amber into the courtroom on a stretcher.

According to court documents, a guilty plea was entered on July 8. Phelps agreed to plead guilty to two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol causing death and one count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing substantial bodily harm. For the three felonies, she agreed to serve a sentence of between two and 20 years in a Nevada Department of Corrections facility for each count. A judge will determine the total length of her sentence.

Phelps was originally charged with 10 counts, including five counts of reckless driving.

The sentencing of Phelps was postponed until October 21.
