The director of Alien: Romulus said he had to fight Disney to keep the ending

Fede Álvarez, director of Alien: Romulus, said he had to fight with Disney executives to ensure the film ended the way he wanted.

Disney objected to a disturbing scene at the end of the film, he said – which sparked a dispute over the film's ending.

Disney representatives did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Set after Alien, the film is about a group of young scavengers who break into an abandoned space station to steal equipment and escape from a hellish mining colony.

Once inside, they discover that the company that owns the station has been experimenting on the Xenomorphs, and they must fight to survive. At the end of “Alien: Romulus,” Rain (Cailee Spaeny) must fight a monstrous new creature called the “Offspring” – the scene was the catalyst for the showdown, according to Álvarez.

“So when there's resistance, I basically say, 'Okay, that's good. We're on track. The studio is pushing for it,'” he said.

According to Álvarez, Disney's discomfort was not because they didn't like it, but because they thought it might be “too much.”

“And I thought to myself, 'Yeah, now that you said we shouldn't do this, I know I'm going to do it,'” Álvarez continued.

“If you get an 'Alien' movie from a company that Disney owns and immediately say, 'Yeah, let's do it,' then that's kind of a failure. So we really pushed the envelope and I'm glad we did.”

The gruesome ending caused a lot of discussion among fans, who reacted to the intensity of the sequence.

Álvarez's confidence in the film's final act also paid off at the box office: “Alien: Romulus” grossed $108 million worldwide in its opening weekend, according to Forbes, and also achieved more ticket sales in the U.S. than “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

It will be a while before we know how much the film will gross in theaters, but it looks like another big win for Disney, as according to Collider, the film has already made more than its $80 million budget.
