Some promising news about the release date of the second season of “The Last Of Us” on HBO

While we know that The Last of Us season 2 is scheduled to release in 2025, we now have new information that helps us narrow that down significantly. Filming on The Last of Us season 2 has now wrapped as the series moves into post-production, so we can estimate the release date based on season 1.

The Last of Us Season 1 was filmed in July 2022. The release was then in January 2023, six months later. So using this metric, it is easy to estimate that if filming had just been completed, the release would be at the end of February 2025 for the series' release, which would be a little over two years after Season 1, which is unfortunately pretty standard for streaming series these days. Let's say Season 2 is bigger and better, maybe eight months of post-production this time, so April 2025.

We know that season 2 of The Last of Us is only supposed to adapt half of part 2, since the second game is much longer than the first. There are a lot of theories about how they might pull off this concept. Maybe they'll keep a big “moment” at the beginning and push it way back this time. Or maybe the seasons will be split, with an Ellie and an Abby perspective. My guess is neither will happen and it will be a pretty straight-forward adaptation of the timeline with some sort of set stopping point in the middle. No gimmicks.

This time around, things were kept very secret on set. We've mostly seen set shots of Dina and Ellie and a bit of Jesse. Importantly, we haven't seen Kaitlyn Dever's Abby, who we haven't seen except for a blurry glimpse in one trailer, although I assume she's almost bound to be in future trailers as we get closer to launch.

Of course, expectations are extremely high for season 2 of the series, as season 1 was nominated for 24 Emmys and won eight, although not in the major categories. No doubt season 2 will be aiming to match that number with even more wins, although that's a tall order given the strong field. Perhaps less so now that Succession is over, we'll see.

As far as we know, three seasons of The Last of Us are planned, as that would almost certainly take us to the end of the existing games. While it's possible that The Last of Us Part 3 could come out at some point, that seems unlikely to result in a third season, although it's certainly possible that HBO could return to the series years later if that were to happen. They obviously wouldn't make a season 4 with storylines related to Part 3 without releasing the actual game.

But yeah, there's only about six months until season two. Buckle up.
