On August 16, Lukashenka signed a decree pardoning 30 political prisoners, including 14 women and 16 men, some of whom are seriously ill. In the last 24 hours, political prisoners have begun to leave the penal colonies on pardon. Currently, Viasna human rights activists know the names of seven released political prisoners. The human rights activists are not publishing the names of the other released prisoners for security reasons.

As a reminder, on July 2, Alexander Lukashenko signed the amnesty law marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders. Like previous similar laws, it does not grant amnesty to persons “involved in extremist and terrorist activities.” Nevertheless, several political prisoners were released.

Viasna human rights activists are aware that 18 political prisoners were released on July 3. Among them are two women and six men, including Ryhor Kastusiou, a cancer patient who was sentenced to ten years in a penal colony.
