2 teens and 1 adult injured in crash on I-49 after driver attempted to pass Freightliner

BELTON, Missouri (KCTV) – Three people were injured Monday when a teenage driver attempted to overtake a semi-truck on I-49 and struck the side of the truck, causing an accident.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred at 11:20 p.m. on I-49 southbound near Highway 58 in Belton, Missouri.

According to MSHP, the 17-year-old driver of a 2016 Ford attempted to pass a 2020 Freightliner semi-trailer truck. The 17-year-old struck the driver's side of the Freightliner and then veered off I-49, causing the Ford to roll over.

The driver, from Archie, Missouri, was wearing a seatbelt and reportedly suffered minor injuries. His two passengers, 18-year-old Joshua Olsen of Harrisonville, Missouri, and 21-year-old Jeny Dominguez of Orlando, Florida, suffered moderate injuries. It is unclear if they were wearing seatbelts. All three were taken to area hospitals.

The driver of the Freightliner was not injured.

Cass County Sheriff's officials assisted in the investigation of the accident.
