33-year-old man shot dead in ‘major brawl’ at homeless camp in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS – A 33-year-old man was shot and killed after a “large brawl” broke out at a Minneapolis homeless encampment Monday night, Minneapolis police said.

No arrests were made. Police cleared and closed the homeless camp after the shooting.

“The loss of life due to the use of firearms during a confrontation has affected another Minneapolis neighborhood,” said Police Chief Brian O'Hara.

“This senseless loss of life is a harsh reminder of the violence that is still all too common. I am grateful that this camp was cleared before further violent crimes could occur in this neighborhood.”

Officers from the Third Precinct responded to the shooting shortly after 5 p.m. Monday at the vacant lot in the 3300 block of 3rd Avenue South.

Police found a man lying on the sidewalk. The man was treated at the scene and then taken to Hennepin Healthcare, where he later died.

Investigators believe a large brawl broke out in a homeless camp and spilled out onto the street, where shots were fired. “The injured man ran along the sidewalk and collapsed,” police said.

Minneapolis Police Department forensics officers examined the scene and collected evidence. Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the fight and shooting.
