Hit and run leads to summons and court date – Peak of Ohio

A hit-and-run accident last Thursday left two vehicles significantly damaged and the suspected driver was charged. The incident occurred at around 5:50 p.m. at the intersection of Gunntown Road and South Main Street.

According to Bellefontaine Police, three vehicles were involved in the crash. The first vehicle, a 2004 Honda Civic driven by Tyler Cable, was struck from behind by a maroon Chevrolet truck. The impact caused the Honda to be thrown into a 2016 Ford Transit van driven by Jason Wren, which had several passengers on board, including children.

Officers were alerted to the suspect vehicle, a maroon Chevrolet truck, fleeing the scene. Officers quickly located the truck in a nearby McDonald's parking lot. The truck had significant damage to the front end and was parked in a manner that suggested a hasty departure.

Andy Sheriff, the driver of the Chevrolet truck, stated that the damage to his vehicle occurred the night before when he struck a fire hydrant. Despite the visible damage and red paint splatter consistent with the incident, Sheriff denied involvement in the accident. He claimed he had stopped before hitting the vehicles in front of him and had only stopped at McDonald's to use the restroom before going to work at Waffle House.

The sheriff received a traffic ticket for hit-and-run and was ordered to appear in Bellefontaine Municipal Court on Wednesday. The case is ongoing and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

Local businesses in the area were checked for surveillance footage, but no cameras were found that recorded the incident. The police report noted that the sheriff appeared nervous during the interaction and handshaking was observed.
