Man allegedly brandished a gun in front of his family during a road rage incident in Pompano Beach

POMPANO BEACH, Florida. — A South Florida man is facing two felony charges after authorities say he pointed a gun at two parents as they drove their 4-year-old son in a driving rage incident in Pompano Beach in May.

Joseph Maher, 32, of Boynton Beach was booked into the Broward Sheriff's Office main jail on Monday, online records show, and is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on May 23 in the 1200 block of West Atlantic Boulevard.

According to a BSO report, the victims told investigators that Maher, who was driving a rented Chrysler Pacifica, became angry when the victim tried to pull into the road in front of him in a construction zone.

“As they came to a stop at the light, (redacted) looked over at Maher and saw him pointing a black firearm at her and (redacted),” officers wrote. The victim said this caused her to fear for her life.

According to authorities, Maher began “waving” the gun as he drove west on Atlantic Boulevard and then onto the highway.

The report said the victims took a photo of the license plate of the rented minivan and investigators were able to match it to Maher, who they said they determined was an armed, high-risk security guard at a Fort Lauderdale hotel.

Officers wrote that they went to Maher's apartment with the permission of his fiancée and noticed tactical gear and a holstered pistol. The report states that officers asked to speak with Maher.

Authorities said Maher came out and told officers he had not given them permission to enter the home. As officers left, Maher claimed he did not know why investigators were in his home and declined to speak to them without an attorney after they told him they wanted to hear “his side of the story.”

Maher was still in jail on $30,000 bail Tuesday morning.
